Panel of Interview: A board consists of 4 or 5 members will take interview of the candidate which will be headed by UPSC member. Others may include retired bureaucrat, professor, one member from Labour ministry or EPFO. Though no one can predict who will be the board members but we can surely say that they will be competent, unbiased, positive and knowledgeable persons.

What UPSC say about Interview?
The candidate will be interviewed by a Board of competent and unbiased observers who will have before them a record of his/her career. The object of the Interview is to assess the personal suitability of the candidate for the Service.

The candidate will be expected to have taken an intelligent interest not only in his/her subjects of academic study but also in events which are happening around him/her both within and outside his/her own state or country, as well as in modem currents of thoughts and in new discoveries which should rouse the curiosity of well educated youth.
The technique of the interview is not that of a strict cross examination, but of a natural, though directed and purposive conversation, intended to reveal mental qualities of the candidate.

The Board will pay special attention to assessing the intellectual curiosity, critical powers of observation and assimilation, balance of judgment and alertness of mind, initiative, tact, capacity for leadership; the ability for social cohesion, mental and physical energy and powers of practical application; integrity of character; and other qualities.

How to prepare for Personality Test/Interview?
“ One important key to success is self-confidence. An important key to self-confidence is preparation.”

To get good score in Personality Test one need to consider all dimensions of preparation. There are 3 dimensions of Interview preparation.
1. Self-preparation
2. Preparation with friend or any other person
3. Preparation with teacher or mentor

All the three ways are very important and interrelated.
Following 10 steps are based on these three dimensions.
1. Read national newspaper on a daily basis. Spend around 2 hours on reading editorials, news related to government, development, state matters, labour issues etc. Also focus on topics related to your biodata.

2. Support your reading with internet. Preferably Govt. websites are good for preparation. But some private websites, blog and wikipedia are also useful if you select as per your need.

3. Prepare important topics of your Graduation and Post Graduation  subjects. Interview board provide special attention to this area. Stick to basics of your subject and try to prepare 2 or 3 topics with depth.

4. Read relevant magazines for current topics, interviews etc.

5. Request your friend or any other person at your home, office to take your mock interview. Purpose of this interview is to do practice and improve the flow of speech. Don’t be serious about the feedback which you get from friends. If you get confused after the feedback of your friends, consult your interview teacher or guide.

6. Think as many as possible questions and prepare your answers to them in points format in a separate notebook. Consult with your interview teacher if you face any problem in formatting the answers.

7. Do some mirror practice and self mock practice at home.

8. Take interview seriously and do not underestimate interview panel ever.

9. Consulting a professional interview teacher is very helpful in many ways. Sometimes some minor issues in personality become hindrance in selection, you can work on these issues with the help from teacher. A good teacher help you by providing quality feedback, reliable information, conducting mock interview and solving your queries.

10. Allot your available time in the above mentioned activities simultaneously. Many candidates do mistake on this part. They think that firstly they will finish reading part and then will do practice. This is not a correct thinking. Read and do regular practice as discussed above.

Wish you all the best!
